Please join the Mile High Chapter Education Committee at our monthly luncheon on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Our own MHC ALA member Joel Duran will present on "LGBT+ Core Essentials."
Keeping Diversity in mind is an essential practice in our world - not only does it create a more effective workplace, but it is the ethical choice to make. In order to realize a vision of inclusivity, education on LGBT + people is a vital step. This conversation is meant to cover concepts of sex, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, and how the understanding of these concepts allows for a more inclusive workplace. Attendees will be allowed to ask questions, whether directly or anonymously, regarding topics which may not have arisen in natural conversation previously.
Key Takeaways:
- Historical background to the dangers which face LGBT people
- Foundations on sex versus gender expression
- Language and Pronoun etiquette
- Tips for applying gender inclusiveness
Our Speaker:
Joel Duran (He/Him/His) is a Latino Queer Man who has been an advocate for the LGBT + community since he first came out in college. Being a passionate student and educator, Joel's approach to equity work is founded on removing ignorance through compassionate lessons and moments of humor. The love for advocacy came not from desire, but from need, as a child of a single immigrant mother, learning how to speak up for others was a necessity. This necessity only developed as Joel became a first-generation college student learning how to maneuver a system not built for the success of all. Joel graduated with B.A.s in Philosophy and Mathematics and is currently attending UCD to receive their Master of Public Administration with an emphasis in Social Equity. Currently working for the Denver City Attorney's Office as a Legal Administrator, he is an active member of his local community by being a lead volunteer at Out Boulder County, Chair of the City Attorney's Office EDI Team, Co-Chair of the MHC ALA DEIA Committee, and participating in the local NY ballroom scene.
